Victorian Litter Action Alliance

VLAA was established in April 2000 to coordinate the efforts of organisations across the state to combat the problem of litter. VLAA members coordinate their own litter prevention activities, but more importantly, VLAA aims to provide coordinated successful litter prevention programs for the whole state based on what works.

Thirteen organisations from state and local government, industry and the community make up VLAA which operates within an annual business plan.

To progress best practice litter prevention for the state, VLAA appointed a litter champion in April 2002.

Best Practice Approach

The annual reports for the litter champion project document the significant progress made towards strengthening the links between organisations and bodies. The litter champion has played a crucial role in furthering best practice in litter prevention, with three implementation kits now released.

The adoption of a best practice approach is intended to strengthen the ability of stakeholders, particularly local government, to take action to reduce and eliminate litter.

The Victorian approach to litter prevention is unique in Australia. Its emphasis on coordinating litter reduction activities through a peak body incorporating government and non-government sectors means:

  • gaps in the State's litter reduction activities are identified
  • overlaps are minimised
  • information sharing between VLAA's member agencies is maximised.
