VLAA members

The Victorian Litter Action Alliance is the peak body for litter management and reduction in Victoria. VLAA was formed in April 2000 to coordinate efforts to combat the problem of litter and represents an advance on previous governmental efforts to coordinate anti-litter activities in that it has developed a rolling business plan that documents its activities and the activities of its members.

VLAA aims to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, complementary and consistent approach to reducing litter in the Victorian environment to acceptable levels through the combined efforts of state and local government agencies, and the voluntary and private sectors.

There are thirteen members of the Alliance each playing its own part in the fight against litter.

Sustainability Victoria is a state agency playing a lead role in litter prevention. It does this through information, program development, and funding assistance, partnership development and supporting VLAA's Litter Champion.

Butt Littering Trust is an environmental product stewardship organisation, with Trustees representing a range of stakeholders, 'the Trust' has initiated and supported over 70 butt litter prevention projects since its inception in 2003. The Trust strives to further improve its capacity and that of its partners, by forging strategic partnerships and fostering change in butt littering behaviour throughout the community.

EPA Victoria enforces the litter provisions of the Environment Protection Act 1970 and runs a Litter Report Line where members of the public can report people for car littering.

Melbourne Water is involved in litter prevention through its role of managing Melbourne's water supply catchments, waterways and major drainage systems. It tackles the litter problem in a number of ways including providing advice and support for local government, installing litter traps in priority areas and through cleaning up litter affected areas along waterways.

Parks Victoria's litter activities focus on conservation and reducing impacts on the environment in land under its control.

VicRoads has responsibility for roadside vegetation management.

Melbourne City Council looks after street cleaning and designated public places (such as plazas and malls) and runs litter prevention campaigns targeting visitors and businesses.

Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is the peak representative and lobbying body for Victoria's 79 councils.

Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) assists local governments to maintain peace, order and good government in the municipal districts of Victoria.

Plastic and Chemical Industries Association (PACIA) plays a key role in regulatory affairs affecting the plastics and chemicals industries, in areas such as the National Pollution Inventory, National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme, anti-dumping legislation, and the National Packaging Covenant and what its members are doing in relation to items in the litter stream.

Packaging Stewardship Forum promotes the interests of the packaging industry through the cooperative development of public environmental policy by undertaking research and development programs and its conduct of environmental programs.

Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) runs a series of programs focusing on litter and waste reduction and prevention, including Tidy Towns, City Pride and Stationeers - Right on Track.

Association of Victorian Regional Waste Management Groups provides a forum for the 16 Regional Waste Management Groups to meet and discuss waste management and related issues for their member municipalities.  

Victorian Waste Management Association is the leading association in the waste management industry, providing member representation and developing professional relationships with relevant authorities and industry. The VWMA works toward improving the image, professionalism and standards in all sectors of the waste management industry including the collection, transportation and disposal of all forms of waste.
