Introduction

This Litter Campaign Toolkit has been developed to help you tackle the litter challenges in your local area.

It's a big job and we know we can win. Litter is totally preventable, and it is the goal of this campaign to gain community acceptance and understanding of the problem, the impact of litter, their responsibility, and ultimately change their behaviours.

This kit is designed to help you run the campaign at your local level for immediate impact using these free statewide resources. With this easy to use material (resources, ideas, templates) you will be able to keep litter prevention top of mind:

•  Raise awareness of the problem.
• Achieve community acceptance that there is a problem.
• Move the community from awareness to action through the creation of community activities and local media coverage.
• Educate the community about common littering behaviours and simple steps that can be taken to reverse these.
• Prompt community and individual action to decrease littering.
• Recruit litter champions to build the groundswell of support and action.
• Help you effectively get your litter prevention messages across using a range of communications vehicles. 

This kit is designed to support your existing litter prevention efforts, including enforcement and infrastructure - both essential components of a successful litter prevention strategy.

Essentially the kit is a one-stop-shop to help you plan and implement your public information and education activities.

You'll find information on existing campaign themes that you can use, such as the Do The Right Thing campaign, or ideas on how to develop your own local themes. There is a communications plan template to help you develop a tailored, sustainable program as well as tips on dealing with the local media and ideas for local events and activities to involve your community.

Remember though, that the best communications plan can not work in isolation.

Together these three critical elements - education, infrastructure and enforcement - can, and do, make a difference.
