The Program Model
Litter prevention programs are essentially behaviour change programs. The aim is two fold:
- To increase positive behaviour by encouraging people to 'do the right thing'
And:
- To reduce litter at its source by changing the investment of organisations from 'clean up' to prevention.
The Model
The model outlined here has been developed and refined with much consultation with people 'in the field' who develop and deliver programs at an officer level. It is presented step-by-step as a guide, understanding that some aspects, like the research and evaluation elements, will be continually evolving and improving.
The model provides practical tools and prompts to explore avenues you may not immediately think of as you develop your program. These essential program planning and implementation stages are explained in further detail, however this diagram provides a great visual explanation of how all of the components fit together. The key components to a successful litter prevention program are research, building the litter task force, planning your project, implementation and evaluation. Planning is a dynamic process with new knowledge informing and changing the project as it is developed.
