What is a Litter Task Force?

A Litter Task Force is a group formed with the specific purpose of coming together to address litter. While the management of litter obviously has its part to play, the key area of focus for such a group is litter prevention. A Litter Task Force may convene on an on-going basis or for a specific timeframe to address an identified litter issue. The group brings together people from all concerned organisations.

Potential Litter Task Force members are those who are concerned or involved with the issue. Because of their involvement and ownership of the issue many program partners will have knowledge, networks and resources which can add significant value to a program.

As there is rarely a clear path to follow or a clear delineation of responsibility when solving litter issues, the individuals involved in a Litter Task Force pool their resources to problem solve in a practical, manageable way. This can include sharing personal and organisational experience, vocation specific knowledge, research and programs previously conducted, contacts and financial support if necessary. Sharing responsibility and leading initiatives in their own roles and organisations is the key component of an effective Litter Task Force.
