Do The Right Thing
'Do the Right Thing' Statewide Resources
In last year's VLAA Litter Prevention and Capacity Building Survey people surveyed asked for more education and advertising materials. So...
The Packaging Stewardship Forum and the Litter Champion have teamed up to provide you with free advertising and educational tools to tackle and prevent litter.
These tools are based on solid research demonstrating the effectiveness of the 'Do The Right Thing' slogan. Recent research tells us that 'Do The Right Thing' resonates well with all walks of life. Eighty one percent of people equated 'Do The Right Thing' with 'you put your litter in the bin' (Genesis research, 2006, PSF).
We know that the best way to prevent litter is to keep the message consistent. These tools bring the two key success factors together as we have combined consistency with a powerful message that is proven to work!
Each of these resources can be tailored to cater for just about any opportunity, including:
- Events, for example: 'Do The Right Thing at the Falls Festival.'
- Council/shire/municipality/region, for example: "Do The Right Thing in Seymour.'
- Places, for example: 'Do The Right Thing in Our Camping Ground' or 'Do The Right Thing in Our Park.'
- Your organisational logo can be included on some of the materials
You can select from a range of formats those tools which will work best for your project. The formats available are:

How to use Do The Right Thing
Psychologically, Do The Right Thing delivers a positive pitch, based on the findings of six year's of Littering Behaviour Studies, and has been designed to gently encourage people to 'Do The Right Thing' with their waste. The Do The Right Thing message can be tailored to support local events, busy public spaces and natural places.
How the Campaign may not be used. Because Do The Right Thing is designed to convey positive messages to the community; signage, stickers and other educational materials warning of penalties, prosecutions and other kinds of sanctions are not permitted and will not be approved for use under the Do The Right Thing campaign.
If you want to reference or support the theme in media or publications, the Do The Right Thingis one of the most successful behaviour-change campaigns in Australian history, responsible for a 70 per cent reduction in litter across Australia during the 1980s.
