Litter and nurdle clean up
On Friday 9 October 2015, VLAA members and litter stakeholders from RMIT University got their hands sandy with the Port Phillip EcoCentre at a beach litter and microplastics / nurdle (pre-production plastic pellets - see picture) clean up and survey in St. Kilda.
On the day we learnt about the work of Port Phillip EcoCentre, the natural and indigenous history of the area, and St Kilda's evolution over time before hitting the sand to clean up. Together the group collected three, full Clean Up Australia bags of rubbish, and we learnt how to sweep the sand for microplastics and nurdles.
Litter auditing and clean up are key components to successful litter prevention programming. Port Phillip EcoCentre is a local leader in this space, facilitating and enabling other groups working in this field to run successful programs.
